The unions continue to do good with the disbursement of funds for various purposes.

With the global financial crisis causing much anxiety, the education of the young gains even greater urgency to buffer against future uncertainties.

The National Transport Workers’ Union and the Singapore Bank Employees’ Union gave out more than $130,000 to members’ children to further their education.

Blooming Investment

What better way to enjoy a beautiful Sunday afternoon than spending quality time with the family and enjoying a picnic in a beautiful park? That is what exactly happened when more than 1,000 members and their families came to witness the National Transport Workers’ Union’s Scholarship and Bursary Awards Presentation Ceremony at the Hortpark on 12 October 2008.

Everyone was given a picnic pack and they spread out on the lush green lawn, taking in the beautiful flora and fauna of the park.

The Guest-of-Honour, Mr Seng Han Thong, NTUC Assistant Secretary General and NTWU Executive Secretary, congratulated and presented awards totalling $120,000 to 385 deserving children of members for all academic levels from Primary 1 to University.

Mr Seng said education and lifelong learning is key to staying relevant especially in the uncertain economy caused by the current financial crisis.

After the ceremony, the members and their families joined Mr Seng on a walk through the Hortpark to Telok Blangah Hills which is along the Southern Ridges Route to further appreciate the beautiful scenery.

Bankrolling Education

The Singapore Bank Employees’ Union gave out scholarships and bursaries worth $11,000 to 55 children of its members.

Held at NTUC Centre on 8 November 2008, the union has been helping members’ children in their studies with three types of awards: Achievement Awards, Merit Awards and Bursaries.

"The objectives of the union’s Scholarship Awards are to commend and boost the morale of our members’ children who have excelled academically. We also provide financial assistance in the form of bursary awards to our needy members for their children’s education," said SBEU’s Deputy General Secretary Susie Foo.
