NTUC Media Co-operative Limited has evolved as the voice piece of the labour movement. The labour movement’s vision for a communication link with workers can be looked back to be as old as the National Trades Union Congress itself. The NTUC Secretary-General edited the first labour publication, “Perjuangan”. After a series of changes, NTUC Media was established in 1997 with a vision to fulfill NTUC’s vision to run a professional publications’ management body.
The key social roles of NTUC Media are encompassed in two perspectives. It strives to promote an enhanced understanding of labour and current issues such as age friendly employment practices that help to enhance the employability and re-employment of all workers, including older workers and women who form a significant potential source of labour supply. Please refer to www.ntuc.org/ageprofile for the age disclosure chart and more information. Media also aims to be an excellent media provider, offering a range of more effective products and services to reach target markets of its clients at affordable rates with value-add services.
This social mission is achieved with its current vehicles, NTUC This Week and Lifestyle. In addition, NTUC Media’s management and staff have been actively engaged in increasing and improving the quality of activities that support its co-operatives’ social mission. The genuine support of various members of the NTUC Family – unions, co-operatives, associations and affiliated companies – has laid paths for these efforts.
To refocus its energy in publications and events, NTUC Media confined its stake in a joint venture, SPH UnionWorks Pte Ltd, that operates two radio stations – Radio 91.3 and Radio 100.3. NTUC Media now owns 20 per cent of SPH UnionWorks, down from 50 per cent. NTUC Media also carries out ad-hoc publishing and events management.
